Ukraine's Naftogaz Welcomes EU Proposal for New Gas Talks
By Sean Carney
Ukraine's state-owned natural gas and oil importer Naftogaz said on Friday that it supports a European proposal made Thursday to restart three-way talks with Russia on future gas supplies.
Following the just-agreed truce between Ukraine and Russia, Naftogaz said it welcomed the proposal of European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker to restart trilateral talks between Ukraine, the EU and Russia about gas supplies to Ukraine.
The current winter interim agreement, which was agreed by the three sides in Brussels in October, resulted in Russia resuming gas shipments to Ukraine late last year after a six-month stoppage. The pact expires at the end of March.
The company also said it now allows physical access to Ukraine's gas transmission system for EU officials to monitor daily flows and volumes of gas to and from Ukraine.
